The sacrifice that is sacrificed for the new born child for the purpose of gratitude is called “akîka”. It is sunnah to sacrifice an aqiqah.

According to what is narrated from Ibn Abbas (r.a.), the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) Hasan and Hz. He sacrificed an aqiqa for Hussein (Ebû Dâvûd, Dahaya, 21; Nesai, Akîka, 1) and said in one of his hadiths: "Every child is like a hostage in exchange for the aqiqa sacrifice to be sacrificed for him on the seventh day (of his birth). After the sacrifice of Akîka is sacrificed, the head of the child is shaved and a name is given to him.” (Ebû Dâvûd, Dahaya, 21) In this respect, although the aqiqah sacrifice can be sacrificed from the day the child is born to the age of puberty, it is more virtuous to be sacrificed on the seventh day of birth. It is mustahab to give a name to the child on the same day and to give gold for the weight of his hair or give alms in the amount of its value (Ibn Rüsd, Bidaye, I, 463-464).
